With sparkling salt water bays to the west and towering, evergreen-forested, snow-crested mountains to the east, Whatcom County, Washington, is one of the world's most desirable places to put down roots.
Located on the U.S.-Canada border, Whatcom County offers the best of the Pacific Northwest: stunning waterfront and waterview properties, rich rural farmland and country estates, a sophisticated university community, quick and easy access to two major cosmopolitan cities - Seattle to the south and Vancouver, British Columbia, to the north, and an unparalleled array of recreational opportunities, from ski to sea (and including the world-famous Ski to Sea annual race).
At 2,126 square miles, and with a population of 166,800, Whatcom County begins at sea level and rises to 10,788 feet at the peak of Mt. Baker, showpiece of the Mt. Baker Wilderness area and home to some of the finest ski and snowboard runs in North America.
Residents also enjoy a myriad of lake, river and saltwater activities: motor and sailboating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, clamming, crabbing, river rafting, whale watching, swimming, and diving. An excellent network of trails, public wilderness areas, and campgrounds offer opportunities for hiking, biking, tent camping and RVing. Public parks abound throughout Whatcom County.
For golfers, beautiful course-side homes may be found in several communities, including Semiahmoo, Sudden Valley and Lynden.
Bellingham, the county seat, population 75,000, is home to the Pacific Northwest's top-ranked regional public educational institution, Western Washington University, plus bookstores, art galleries, museums, theatres, excellent restaurants, coffee houses and music venues.
Weather is generally mild overall, with an annual average of 8.5 days of snowfall and 6 days below freezing. Precipitation averages 35 inches per year.
