Ferndale Washington
Known for pride in its pioneer heritage and an abundance of public parks and preserved wild spaces, this community with a population of just under 11,000 on the lower Nooksack River offers a relaxed, rural lifestyle with excellent schools and easy access to more urban amenities.
Located on the I-5 Highway, just 6 miles north of Bellingham and 13 miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border; Ferndale, Washington, is positioned to take advantage of some of the most spectacular views of Mt. Baker (a skier and snowboarder's paradise) anywhere in Whatcom County.
Outdoor opportunities abound in Ferndale, which is home to the Conoco-Phillips Sports Complex, a multi-million dollar facility with multiple softball and soccer fields equipped for day and nighttime use. The Nooksack River is easily accessible for canoeing, kayaking and fishing, and saltwater beaches, and prime salt waterfront homes can be found west of the city limits, just beyond lush, rolling farmland.
Within its boundaries, Ferndale's unique public spaces include Pioneer Park, a collection of preserved pioneer cabins in a recreated pioneer community setting, and a large county park which encompasses Hovander Homestead Park and the adjoining Tennant Lake Interpretive Center and Fragrance Garden. This 720 acre historic site offers extensive walking trails, including a wetlands boardwalk, river access, picnic areas, and an actual vintage farm that plays seasonal host to local farm animals and master gardeners.
Annual festivals and events in Ferndale include a Civil War reenactment, the Bellingham Scottish Highland Games, Whatcom County's annual Old Settlers' Picnic and Parade (at which everyone is invited to become an "old settler"), a downtown street festival, and a citywide yard sale. Ferndale is also the spot where the canoeing leg of the annual Ski to Sea marathon race meets the mountain biking segment.
Coast Salish Native American cultural influences are found in Ferndale's proximity to the Lummi Indian Nation, where the annual First Nation Stommish war canoe races are held. The Lummi Silver Reef Casino offers a slice of Vegas in the country with an elegant hotel, fine dining, spa, indoor pool, and meeting and event facilities.
